Similar to EMDR, which uses rapid eye movement, healing takes place by accessing specific parts of your brain through your eyes. Unlike EMDR, however, your eyes will remain fixated on certain points throughout the process. 


You can think of a brain spot as a doorway to the subconscious mind. Unlocking this door can provide you access to deeply rooted issues within your brain and that you are carrying within your body. Staying focused allows your brain to release, and in a very real sense, reprogram. This process also provides access to your body's natural ability to heal.

What to Expect During a Brainspotting Session?

Typically, your session will last about an hour, but you can request additional time to allow for more processing if desired.  First, it will be vital to have a good relationship with your counselor. You may spend a few sessions talking to your counselor and constructing a platform to facilitate BrainSpotting.  Often BrainSpotting can be a tool that can be interweaved into traditional counseling providing you a mix of benefits and flexibility. 


When you begin your BrainSpotting session, you will be asked to talk about thoughts or situations that are causing distress. Guided by your counselor you will begin to identify core feelings associated with your distressing situation or thought. Next your counselor will use a therapeutic tool to access your neurological path through your field of vision.  Throughout the experience you will be supported by your counselor and monitored closely.  Your level of comfort will be assessed during the process and inform the progress of treatment.  When you achieve the targeted spot in your field of the beauty of BrainSpotting begins.


Remaining focused on a specific spot allows your brain to release the emotions directly connected to that issue.
