EMDR

If Trauma Has You Feeling Stuck, EMDR May Help

There is nothing like a trauma flashback. All it takes is one trigger, and you may find yourself reliving the event as if it is happening again. EMDR is a therapeutic approach that helps people reprocess traumatic or disturbing events. Likewise, it can help reduce or eliminate trauma triggers, and the symptoms of PTSD you may be living with.

It might sound too good to be true. Yet, EMDR is an evidence-based, highly effective counseling approach that is changing lives around the world. Understanding the science behind it may help you see the magic of it all actually resides within you. With the guidance of a counselor, you can reprocess troubling memories that may be affecting your everyday life.

Understanding Trauma and How EMDR Works

Traumatic or extremely unsettling events disrupt the brain's usual routine of processing information. Instead, a distress signal alerts your sympathetic system, which sends you into a fight or flight response. This can lead to a rush of adrenaline, heightened awareness, and a flood of intense emotions.

In a state of hyperarousal or survival mode, your senses gather information, and send it to your brain as quickly as possible. As a result, this can prevent connections from forming within networks that are more capable of adapting and processing. Instead, memories can become stuck or frozen in your mind. Hence, certain sounds or smells can trigger your memories, and quickly send you back into a state of fight or flight.

Some individuals after a traumatic event may develop PTSD. Symptoms may begin immediately or weeks, or even months later. For some, there could be up to a six-month delay before signs of unprocessed trauma develops. Likewise, symptoms of post-traumatic stress vary and can range from mild to severe.

In EMDR therapy, the goal is to reprocess the situation. This time, however, you will be in a safe environment. During the process your counselor will guide you in the specific eye movements. Rapid eye movements engage the parasympathetic system, which relaxes the sympathetic nervous system.

Connecting memories and new information lead to the modification of disrupted neural connections. EMDR provides a way for distressing ideas and emotions to blend with fresh, positive thoughts and create a new sense of harmony from within.

EMDR may result in a significant reduction or even elimination of symptoms.
