What is Complex Trauma?

What is Complex Trauma?

According to Sidran Institute, nearly 70% of adults in the US have experienced trauma at least once in their lives. Of that, an estimated 20% will develop PTSD. As a result, nearly 5% of Americans have PTSD on any given day. So, what makes single-incident trauma different from complex trauma?

You may have guessed, but the difference is the frequency of exposure. Complex trauma is the result of frequent or multiple exposures to traumatic situations. For example, child abuse and severe neglect expose children to trauma repeatedly. As a result, they are likely to develop symptoms of complex trauma.
